The Spiritual Pulse – Walking the Path of Sages in Tanahun

Tanahun is not just a district on the way to Pokhara; it is the spiritual cradle of Nepal. As we step into 2025, the district is seeing a resurgence in “faith-based tourism,” drawing travelers who seek more than just scenery. The journey begins in the heart of the district, Damauli, at the Vyas Gufa. This sacred cave is revered as the birthplace of Sage Ved Vyas, the legendary author of the 18 Puranas and the Great Epic, Mahabharata. Standing at the confluence of the Madi and Seti rivers, one can almost feel the ancient wisdom that permeates the air.
Moving further south, travelers reach Devghat Dham, one of the holiest sites in the Hindu world. Located at the junction of the Trishuli and Kali Gandaki rivers, Devghat serves as a serene sanctuary for retirees and spiritual seekers. In 2025, the site has upgraded its riverside facilities, making it a peaceful hub for morning meditation and ritual baths.
The spiritual map of Tanahun also includes the enigmatic Dhorbarahi Temple. Tucked away in a lush forest near Shuklagandaki, this temple is famous for its mysterious “intermittent” spring. The water level in the temple’s pond rises and falls at irregular intervals, a phenomenon locals believe is a divine blessing. For those willing to trek higher, Chhimkeshwari Mai stands as the highest point in Tanahun. Often called the “elder sister” of the famous Manakamana Temple, it offers a dual reward: a deep sense of religious fulfillment and a panoramic view of the Himalayas that rivals any viewpoint in the country.
